Programme Manager

Job Summary:
Join an international, multi-disciplinary team responsible for implementing a three year project to promote protection of natural springs in the Western Ghats to enhance biodiversity and meet drinking water needs of rural communities. Project includes partnering with rural communities to access safe and sustainable water sources, development and documentation of best practices for springshed protection, conducting action research to better understand spring systems, and promoting spring policy at the local and state level through capacity building and outreach. The candidate will support the Executive Director and is responsible for operational management and implementation of the programme including administration of the grant, providing vision and leadership, conducting policy advocacy, oversight of a multi-disciplinary team and NGO partners, and timely and successful realization of programme deliverables. The PM will report directly to the Executive Director. This position is based in Panchgani, Maharashtra with field visits to projects throughout the Satara District portion of the Western Ghats.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Management/Communications/Policy degree or related background, preferably with experience in policy, advocacy or communications
  • A minimum of 5 years professional work experience with some project management, office administration or team supervision experience in corporate or NGO sector
  • Ability to communicate a vision and provide leadership to mentor and inspire a team
  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills with advanced computer literacy
  • Able to work independently to achieve deliverables in a highly professional & timely manner
  • Fluent Marathi with good English, conversational Hindi a plus
  • Enthusiastic and highly motivated to make change and positively impact people’s lives

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and management for the programme team including supervision, recruiting, staff training, work planning and annual reviews
  • Lead communication & documentation activities including internal and external presentations and reports; serve as main point of contact for donor, partners, journalists and decision makers
  • Ensure the team meets grant deliverables; coordinate partner activities; monitor programme impact
  • Develop and lead policy/advocacy strategy to incorporate spring protection into local, state and national level policy including creation of outreach materials and policy briefs for decision makers
  • Oversee budgets and finance including monthly accounts review, financial reporting and ensuring compliance with donor and trust standards
  • Develop administrative systems as needed and provide programmatic support to the Executive Director as needed
  • Conduct occasional field visits to oversee implementation, attend major village functions

Compensation & Logistics:
This is a full-time opportunity. Compensation is competitive and negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Room and board will be provided.

Technical Specialist

Job Summary:
Join an international, multi-disciplinary team responsible for implementing a three year project to promote protection of natural springs in the Western Ghats to enhance biodiversity and meet drinking water needs of rural communities. Project includes partnering with rural communities to access safe and sustainable water sources, development and documentation of best practices for springshed protection, conducting action research to better understand spring systems, and promoting spring policy at the local and state level through capacity building and outreach. The candidate will be the technical team leader responsible for identification of water sources, design of simple spring water harvesting and drinking water systems, springshed protection, and oversight of field staff and construction. The candidate will also contribute significantly to applied research on natural springs including instrumentation, data collection and analyses, and will also contribute to community mobilization and advocacy of spring protection policy. This position is based in Panchgani, Maharashtra with field visits to projects throughout the Satara District portion of the Western Ghats.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Civil Engineering/Physical Science/Environmental Science or related background, preferably with a working knowledge of, or ability to learn, community-based, rural water management
  • A minimum of 3 years professional work experience, preferably with some design and project management or team supervision experience
  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer literacy with knowledge of MS Office, GoogleEarth (or GIS), and a statistical analysis software
  • Fluent Marathi with good English, conversational Hindi a plus
  • 4 wheeler and/or 2 wheeler license or ability to get one preferred
  • Able to work independently to achieve deliverables in a highly professional and timely manner
  • Ability to supervise and mentor field staff & ability to travel and trek to remote locations
  • Enthusiastic and highly motivated to make change and positively impact people’s lives

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct surveys of springsheds including field surveys and informal interviews with villagers create base maps of springs, geology, watershed and groundwater conditions
  • Draft and develop content for resource materials including a spring classification system, manual on springshed best practices, participatory video, PowerPoint presentations for village mobilization
  • Oversee instrumentation of springsheds (i.e. rain gages, flow meters, etc) and creation of participatory monitoring programme to collect spring data
  • Work with senior staff to analyze data and draft research reports on springs including classification, land use impacts, climate change vulnerability, biodiversity, etc.
  • Contribute to community mobilization including oversight of participatory development
  • programme, village presentations, leading village mapping, etc.
  • Oversee protection of spring systems for 12 communities including participatory planning, design, construction, maintenance and monitoring
  • Lead capacity building workshops through hands-on training, exposure tours, & public demonstrations for villagers, local masons, NGO and government field staff
  • Assist development of presentations and policy briefs for decision makers at local, district & state levels
  • Train, supervise and mentor field staff
  • Provide administrative backstop and support of other Grampari programmes as needed

Compensation & Logistics:
This is a full-time opportunity. Compensation is competitive and negotiable based on qualifications and experience. The position is based in Panchgani with frequent field travel and occasional overnight village stays. Room and board will be provided.
